In 1997, while Garry was working at Rebsaman Hospital, Jacksonville, Arkansas in the Transitions Program for Geriatric clients and on staff as Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Church (FUMC), Bryant, Arkansas, he started Daily Bread Counseling. In July 2008 Garry went full time with Daily Bread Counseling. Garry has worked in a wide variety of settings, including community mental health centers, churches, hospitals, outpatient and inpatient facilities, and a neurorestorative (brain injury) rehabilitation center. Garry holds a certification as a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Relief Worker and a certification in Critical Incident Stress Management. Garry works well with people who have difficulties within their relationship, with survivors and their relationships with a brain injury, with individuals and their relationships with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, with individuals who are bereaved, depressed, and with issues related to general stress we all face on a day to day basis.
Garry has been trained in traditional counseling theories and practice from the theory of Alfred Adler. Adlerian Theory believes that everyone is searching for their place to fit in society. The focus should be on the here and now and not in the past or in the future. Adler's view is that we are all interconnected with all living beings and their natural need toward cooperation serves as a strong theory when working with couples and families. Adler's concept of the style of life, where one central theme is reflected in every expression and acts as a guide for the way we view life. Adler believed in the fundamental creative power of individuals and their freedom to choose and change their direction in life.
Garry is also a Licensed Local Pastor within the United Methodist Church, Arkansas Conference and is moving toward ordination as Deacon. Therefore, he practices from a Christ-Centered perspective. He believes that for true healing to occur the Holy Spirit must be present. He believes along with traditional counseling practices the use of prayer, Scripture, and Biblical insight are most important. He practices from a Biblical perspective and therefore does not counsel from any denominational belief.
