RELATIONSHIPS - GO FIGURE
It has been years since I had a course in Geometry. However, I have had a new and deep need to go back and revisit this dreaded subject that at one time in my lift confused me to no end. To understand the basic definitions of terms such as Point, Line, Line-segment, Ray and Angle. At the time of my younger days I could not understand the need to know the difference between acute or obtuse. So, why now? It has to do with a change of perspective. In my youth I only saw Geometry as math. Math that I had to take and that met a requirement in High School. I even tried to justify my time in taking Geometry as a way to improve what limited skill of shooting a game of pool. However, now I am starting to see that Geometry is more than math but about relationships. In my reading of “Geometry for Dummies” (don’t laugh…I had to start somewhere) I read a statement about Union and Intersection Problems. I got to thinking about this could be talking about people. “The intersection of two geometric objects (people) is where they overlap or touch. The union of two objects contain all of each object (person) including the overlapping portion (baggage that each bring into the union). As I prepare to perform a marriage for a couple in a few weeks the following words of the marriage service talks about a union of two people, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the presence of these witnesses to join together these two people (insert names) in holy matrimony, which is an honorable estate, instituted of God, and signifying unto us the mystical union that exists between Christ and his Church; which holy estate Christ adorned and beautified with his presence in Cana of Galilee. It is therefore not to be entered into unadvisedly, but reverently, discreetly, and in the fear of God. Into this holy estate these two persons come now to be joined.” Just as the truth of “unions and intersections” are for Geometry, so are the unions of two people before God. Marriage is not something to be taken lightly when God is present. If you are having problems, seek help before actions break the union that God blessed.
